Modern Languages
Subject Overview
The Modern Languages Department places great importance on providing opportunities for pupils to learn other languages in a fun, creative and inspiring way.
All pupils in S1/S2 study French with timetabled blocks of Spanish and Mandarin. In S3 pupils may choose to study French and/or Spanish. All language courses use innovative materials with an emphasis on new technologies and interactive software. Accordingly, all S1s are provided with Chromebooks.
Ultimately, we want all pupils to succeed in language-learning and offer the opportunity to study for SQA qualifications at National 3, 4, 5, Higher and Advanced Higher Levels in French and Spanish. To make the experience of acquiring a foreign language even more enjoyable, a range of interesting and exciting activities and events are offered, including the S1+2 Media Club and the S3 – 6 Stirling Castle Project as well as educational excursions to France and Spain. In addition, pupils can enhance their linguistic experience through participation in foreign language cinema outings, foreign restaurant visits, European market sampling, Mandarin culture days and European Day of Languages celebrations. Pupils also have the opportunity to listen to guest speakers on languages and produce interesting projects on target language films.
